In a Dec. 12 article, the Tampa Tribune featured a piece on Academy at the Lakes soccer star Berlin Waters.

Though at five-feet-tall, she is the smallest player on the soccer team, the Academy freshman has made huge contributions out on the field. With her blazing speed, Berlin has racked up two goals, two assists and 10 shots in just seven games.

Waters is one of the most important players in the Wildcat attack.

And as if that’s not enough. She’s also the only girl on an all-boys soccer team.

One can’t help but notice that she’s probably the fastest player on the Academy of the Lakes soccer team.

But there’s something else – she is the only girl on the boys soccer team in the Class 1A league.

“I want to prove to everyone I deserve to be here,” Waters said.

The staff of WildcatWatch would like acknowledge an additional special student.

Academy at the Lakes senior Becca Berry has been accepted to her first choice school, Agnes Scott College. She has also accepted an offer to join the school’s volleyball team. Berry has been a member of the wildcat volleyball team all four years of high school and has been a starter and captain for the past two.

“I’m really excited to have the opportunity to play college volleyball,” said Becca Berry. “Agnes Scott is a small university that has a lot of opportunities, just like how Academy at the Lakes does. I can’t wait.”

Agnes Scott College is an a private liberal arts women’s college in Decatur, Georgia with 914 students. The college, which is just a 15-minute drive from downtown Atlanta, is a Division III school and is a member of the Great South Atlantic Conference. This year, the Scotties finished the regular season with a record of 4-16.

The Wildcats volleyball team was recently selected to the Florida High School Athletic Association’s fall Academic Team Champion Awards Class 1A team with a combined team GPA of 3.176.

The Academy’s boys golf team received the same award with a combined GPA of 3.324.

The Wildcats dropped another important game Tuesday night, this time to district opponent Cambridge.

After traveling across town to visit the Lancers, the ‘Cats were slaughtered 91-22.

“Obviously something has to change” said senior Matt Grossenbach. “The desire to win was just not present. That is something that needs to change right away.”

Cambridge senior Josh Metcalf led the Lancers with 29 points and Academy at the Lakes senior Matt Grossenbach led the Wildcats with 14 points. Grossenbach’s 14 points put him past the 1,000-point threshold and finished the game with 1,007 points in his high school career.

The Lancers improved to 6-6 on the year (2-1 conference) and moved up to fourth place overall in the district The ‘Cats fell to 1-9 (1-3).

The staff of WildcatWatch would like to acknowledge one of its own on a great accomplishment.

Wildcat Watch writer and Academy at the Lakes senior Matt Grossenbach has been accepted to his first choice school, Colby College. Grossenbach is also planning to participate on the basketball team for the Mules. He currently leads our Wildcats in points (14.5), rebounds (6.3), and blocks per game (2).

Colby is a division three school in the NCAA and is considered a powerhouse in their conference. They are currently 8-1.
